I just want to walk, you know, like normal people

In April, I had a “freak accident.” I was about to leave my house for my evening 2-mile walk when my foot got caught in the bed skirt of my bed, and down I went. In the process my ankle scraped against the wood bed rail, taking a lovely amount of skin with it. When I first fell, my ankle hurt. When I saw it, I assumed it was so painful because it was superficial. Of course, my ankle swelled and was very sore for days.

Uh-Oh

A few days later, I notice it is starting to have redness. Nice. Now I had an infection. I started medication, and I went on with life and began my walking routine again. I am sparing you the photo – it is UGLY.

It is getting better, right?

In late May, I noticed I was having more and more pain in my heel. Being me, I just kept pushing through with my regular walk. Then I walked all over Disneyland (around 20,000 steps a day), and a little less in Hawaii. Once I got home, I went back to my walking routine, and the pain became more severe than before. I finally caved and called for an appointment with my doctor. Unfortunately, my doctor was out of town, but I was able to see the nurse practitioner. She ordered x-rays which showed a small effusion and some tendon thickening. She thought I had an Achilles Tendonitis and ordered a boot.

Nope, not better

For three weeks now I have dragged around this boot. Have you worn one? They are heavy and hot! Yesterday, I was finally able to go back for my follow-up. It was minutely better. They referred me to an ankle specialist in St. Louis. With some luck, I was able to see him today,

Now what?

The doctor looked at my x-rays and examined my foot. He used the word interesting when looking at the x-ray. Let me tell you when a doctor says interesting that is not a good sign. It turns out I have a stress fracture in my heel. Ugh. However, he said the boot would be the treatment he recommended, but it should be much better by now, not still swollen and painful. So the journey continues with an MRI next week.

Getting old is no fun at all!
